In an interview with CNN, Tom Hanks commented on Donald Trump’s handling of a condolence call to the widow of a US. soldier killed in action:
“I’m only knowing what I read in the newspapers and what have you, and it just seems like it’s one of the biggest cock-ups on the planet Earth, if you ask me.”
Agree with Mr Hanks, but… “I’m only knowing…”?
Weird usage. Does it mean “I only know”? — indicating limited intelligence or retention. Or is “only knowing” really at all different than the idea of being either (a) deliberately or unintentionally precluded from knowledge as a result of another party’s deceit and/or obfuscartion , or (b) realising that there may be more than one way of “skinning a rabbit”, either (or both of) which I was hitherto unaware?
Above’s way off-post, I acknowledge… but far more interesting (IMHO) than anything Donald Trumpet has imagined or exuded since 15 June 1946. Just sayin’.
(PS In the UK, the noun, past participal and adjectival constructions of cock-up have been – almost – universally superseded by balls-up, and in the last decade by f*ck-up.).
I’ll collect my coat on the way out…
Ah, so this is where you hang out when you’re not drunk posting in the New WHL thread.
(small world!)
He is well acquainted with Villa’s past cock-ups…

“I’m only knowing” sounds like Indian English.
Just read the comments from the cock-up entry from five years ago, ending up spending half an hour watching old clips from ‘The Thin Blue Line’ including https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jzoz2FgAOxE
Definitely an underrated comedy.
